Supporting our Clients, Supporting Ourselves

The upcoming holiday season can be challenging for many individuals and families, especially as we all navigate the challenging times brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and its lingering effects in 2022. Feelings of grief and loss are heightened during the holiday season. Though these feelings of grief and bereavement are universal, each person experiences their feelings differently. For providers, it is more important than ever to provide individuals and their families with the strategies and resources to take care of their mental and physical health through the holiday season.

In addition, the mental health workforce must also prioritize their own mental health and take time to recover and recuperate. As the year comes to a close, we would like to provide resources and information on self-care practices to our providers. Below we highlight MHTTC events and resources with a focus on grief, loss, and bereavement; managing stress during the holidays; and self-care and wellness.

Grief, Loss, and Bereavement

Responding to the rising numbers of COVID-related deaths in the Spring of 2020, SAMHSA invited our Network to create programming and resources to help providers nationwide increase knowledge and cultivate skills to respond to acute grief and prepare for future needs. As such, we established the MHTTC Grief, Loss, and Bereavement Coordination Group. Since its inception, the group has created five fact sheets (linked below) about grief and curated a webpage of resources relevant to grief sensitivity among the mental health workforce. Additionally, the group designed and developed the Grief Sensitivity Virtual Learning Institute (GSVLI), an online, no-cost learning space designed for frontline workers (mental health and school mental health) supporting individuals experiencing grief and loss through COVID and beyond. The first two Institutes launched in the Fall of 2020 (September and November) and the third round was held in February 2022.

Fact Sheet Series

This series of fact sheets, developed by the MHTTC Network, is designed to help mental health professionals and school mental health personnel support patients, students, and families who may be experiencing grief at any time, including during the COVID-19 pandemic.
