August 7, 2020 - Anxiety, depression, and overdoses have been on the rise in North Carolina since the first COVID-19 case was reported five months ago, and demand for mental health services has increased. Some mental health providers across western North Carolina have come up with creative solutions to combat social isolation, such as giving free smart phones and data plans to people who lack those services and holding support group meetings outside.
“We found that people are just thrilled and that the phone changed their lives,” said Allison Crotty, member engagement director at Partners. “Not only is it helping them engage in services, but they’re also able to listen to music that’s calming and they’re able to maintain social networks.”
