In Rural Utah, Preventing Suicide Means Meeting Gun Owners Where They Are

Utah has one of the highest rates death by suicide in the U.S. and a high rate of gun ownership. When those two factors collide you get a population with lethal access to lethal means, resulting in 85% of firearm deaths being suicides. And the rate in rural parts of the state is higher than in urban areas. The staff at Northeastern Counseling are trying to address the problem by distributing suicide prevention materials and resources, including gun locks and water-resistant gun socks with the Suicide Prevention Lifeline number printed on them, at local gun shows.
