Meet the Team: Michelle Monk, Senior Program Coordinator
My name is Michelle Monk and I am the Senior Program Coordinator for School-Based Mental Health at the South Southwest MHTTC. I joined the Center back in January 2019 and thoroughly enjoyed my inaugural year as I got to know some of the extremely talented leaders in our region and saw the exciting things they’re doing for the students in our schools. There were a lot of new initiatives being implemented, with the biggest projects happening through SAMHSA’s Project AWARE (Advancing Wellness and Resiliency in Education) State Education Agency Grants, which were distributed in four of the five states in our region, and SAMHSA’s Garrett Lee Smith State/Tribal Youth Suicide Prevention and Early Intervention Grants in two of our five states.
In my role as a Senior Program Coordinator, I spend a lot of time interacting with state and local school mental health leaders, hosting workforce training events, participating in workgroups, hosting online learning collaboratives, and disseminating information and resources related to school mental health. I also attend conferences within our region to meet others in the field and share information about the resources available through the South Southwest MHTTC.
In this New Year, I’m planning to continue all of this work and hope to become more involved in efforts to implement trauma-sensitive practices in schools. As the public becomes more aware of Adverse Childhood Experiences and as more legislation is passed requiring schools to understand trauma and provide trauma-related services, we’re seeing increased activity in this area. I hope to be involved with teams that are invested in re-envisioning what schools can do to create safe and supportive environments for all students. Now is the time to begin!
