CBTp Position Statement: CBTp as the Standard of Care

The National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD) and SAMHSA have partnered with lead authors to develop two publications on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for psychosis (CBTp) that address the importance of the routine availability of CBTp in the United States:

  1. The first is a new guide published in May 2021 by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) on the need for the routine administration of CBTp in the U.S. The SAMHSA document represents the first federally-issued recommendation that CBTp should be considered as standard of care for individuals with a psychotic disorder wherever they present for treatment.
  2. The second, more extensive document - The Position Statement on the Routine Administration of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis as the Standard of Care for Individuals Seeking Treatment for Psychosis – is intended to supplement the SAMHSA guide. This position statement details a rationale for sustainable CBTp implementation and delivers key recommendations to support broad intra- and inter-organizational adoption for individuals who have or are at risk of developing a psychotic disorder.

Mental health policy and program staff are encouraged to review these documents and to undertake the recommended policy and practice initiatives to increase the availability of CBTp to individuals with psychosis who will profit from its increased accessibility.
