Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for School Mental Health Provider Self-Care - Series

This free, 8-hour (1 hour/week) training program will teach you how to use Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) for self-care. While these techniques may be helpful to share with your students in the future, the focus of this training will be you. As you may know, mindfulness is “the awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally to the unfolding of experience moment by moment” (Kabat-Zinn, 1970). MBSR has been demonstrated to improve emotional regulation, impulse control, memory, mood, and physical health and decrease stress, pain, depression, and anxiety.

Jim Handlin, Ed.D. of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Center of New Jersey is a Certified MBSR teacher trained at the Center for Mindfulness at UMass Medical School. He has taught the MBSR course developed by Jon-Kabat Zinn in New Jersey since 2004. Dr. Handlin is a Founding Member and Educational Consultant to the MBSR Center of New Jersey. He has a doctorate from Columbia University in Educational Administration, as well as an advanced degree in Career and Counseling Psychology from the same institution. He is a classical languages scholar and well-published poet whose work has been chosen to be carved in marble alongside that of William Carlos Williams, Amiri Baraka and Walt Whitman in the New Jersey Transit area of Penn Station of New York City.
