SAMHSA Advisory: Digital Therapeutics for Management and Treatment in Behavioral Health

Published:
July 24, 2023

Mental health digital therapeutics (DTx) involve the use of software programs to deliver evidence-based and validated interventions to treat mental and behavioral health disorders, such as chronic insomnia, panic, and substance use disorders. They are not direct-to-consumer apps. They require a prescription (or “order”) by a licensed practitioner and can be used independently or as an adjunct to psychotherapy or medications as part of a treatment plan. Further, they have the potential to increase and expand access and options to care and improve population health and health equity.

This advisory introduces readers to digital therapeutics (DTx) and the benefits of their use in behavioral health. It describes the research, regulatory, and reimbursement implications for DTx as well as selection and implementation considerations.
