Differentiating between autism and schizophrenia spectrum disorder can be quite difficult, particularly in adolescents and young adults. This educational webinar reviews the two diagnoses and how to differentiate between them. For individuals who have both disorders, figuring out which one is actually contributing to the patient’s impairment can be challenging, and this webinar will address this concern. Finally, how to treat those with autism, those with psychosis, and those with both disorders is reviewed.   Presenter: Dr. Jean A. Frazier is the Executive Director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center at UMass Chan Medical School. This event was in collaboration with MAPNET (Massachusetts Psychosis Network for Early Treatment). Despite having multiple new medications every year for the treatment of depression, schizophrenia, and mood disorders, the outcomes have not improved as expected. We have moved from a psychodynamic-oriented framework to a biological one, but are still not having the desired outcome. Medication non-adherence and treatment resistance remain big issues daily. It is well known that people with a trauma history have more tendency to be non-adherence to treatment. Taking into consideration the psychodynamic and psychosocial aspects at the time of prescribing can play a significant factor to improve the treatment outcome.   View a recording of this 3/8/2023 session by Raul Condemarin, MD. here.

About this Resource:  This webinar is motivated by the reality that the majority of individuals diagnosed with ‘serious mental illness’ face significant socioeconomic challenges and high rates of employment.  In place of discrete “one size fits all” evidence-based practices, during this presentation Nev Jones, PhD discusses the broader landscape of strategies for improving outcomes across the spectrum of individuals who are currently seeking education or work or have applied for or are already receiving SSI/SSI.  Specific topics Dr. Jones covers include career development and career mobility supports, SSI/SSDI decision making, and financial empowerment strategies for individuals currently unable to work or attend school.

Spirituality and religion can play a significant role in the promotion of health for patients from faith communities, yet these aspects of our patients' identity are often not integrated into their care. For example, many Muslim Americans believe their mental health issues may be linked to spiritual or metaphysical causes and seek clinicians to incorporate spirituality and religion into their treatment plans. However, current literature suggests that clinicians often feel inadequate at integrating religious and spiritual nuances into patient care. This workshop with Dr. Rania Awaad M.D., Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Stanford University School of Medicine, aimed to provide clinicians the knowledge and framework to better address the needs of their Muslim patients. To facilitate this goal, this workshop included research-informed, key concepts in improving clinical report with Muslim patients. The goal was for participants to leave this training with improved competency, comfort, and skill in meaningfully providing whole-person care for their Muslim patients with serious mental illness. This event took place on December 7, 2022.
