Working in the field of mental health can be rewarding and challenging at the same time because of the exposure to people’s feelings and emotions. Religious or spiritual beliefs can often bring great comfort and a source of guidance in these circumstances. Both mental health and religious professionals need to know how to utilize people’s spiritual strengths to help them cope with their mental health needs. We also need to be able to recognize when spiritual or religious beliefs are problematic and how to address them in a sensitive manner. Working as collaborators, mental health and religious professionals can provide an effective form of holistic care that can lead to healing and wholeness. This course focuses on integrating religion/spirituality into mental health services and supports for mental health and religious professionals. There are three modules in the series covering related research, clinical applications, and collaborations between mental health and religious professionals. Dr. Harold Koenig, a leader in the field, brings over 40 years of experience as a researcher, clinician, and educator to the creation of this course. We hope you learn strategies for integrating religion/spirituality into your practice in a way that aligns with client preferences and professional ethics to the benefit of those you support.   This course was created and produced by the Central East MHTTC and the Northeast and Caribbean MHTTC.   Download flyer

As many as 50 percent of autistic youth experience anxiety. This brief report discusses best practices in supporting the mental health of autistic students, with an emphasis on school-based treatments for anxiety.   "In our products, we choose to use identity first language (i.e., autistic students) in response to the preference of many autistic individuals and in an effort to avoid ableist ideologies.   In the U.S., approximately 2% of youth have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Mental health challenges are much more common among autistic youth. Mueser, PhD is Professor of Occupational Therapy, Psychological and Brain Sciences, and Psychiatry, and researcher at the Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation at Boston University, and Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. His research interests are on the development and evaluation of psychosocial interventions for persons with major mental illnesses. His work has involved a range of different interventions, including cognitive behavioral therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder in a range of populations, teaching illness self-management, family psychoeducation, cognitive remediation, comprehensive treatment of first episode psychosis, integrated treatment for co-occurring substance use disorders, and supported employment,. He has published over 400 publications in peer reviewed journals, and co-authored over ten books and 100 book chapters. His research has been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, and the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation. In 2017 he was given the Michael S. Neale Award by Division 18 (Psychologists in Public Service) of the American Psychological Association.    Susan R. McGurk, PhD is clinical and neuropsychologist, Professor of Occupational Therapy, and Psychological and Brain Sciences, and researcher at the Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation at Boston University. Her research interests focus on the treatment and rehabilitation of persons with schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses. She has published over 100 publications in peer reviewed journals. Her research has been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research, and the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation. She was given the Gerard E. Hogarty Excellence in Schizophrenia Award, University of Pittsburgh, and the Rehabilitation Practitioner of Distinction Award, National Rehabilitation Association.

Description: In this webinar we will discuss ways to integrate cultural competence and community inclusion into the services that are provided by your organization. Oftentimes, services are delivered to communities, with little attention to integrate their cultural practices and community norms. When communities are not responsive to the services that are being offered, it leads to a disconnect between those providing the service and those expected to receive them.  This webinar will present creative ways to engage community members by integrating their cultural practices into the services that are being offered.   Objectives:  Identify the community norms and cultural practices of those you serve. Develop an outreach and implementation plan utilizing the cultural practices of your community for the delivery of services. Identify strategies for incorporating cultural values and norms when collaboratively providing evidence-based practices.   Presented By:  Dr. Anitra Warrior is the owner of Morningstar Counseling and Consultation in Lincoln, Nebraska, and is from the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma. She earned her Ph.D. in counseling psychology in 2015 and has operated her clinic since 2012. Since receiving her Ph.D., Dr. Warrior has established four additional clinics that are now located throughout eastern Nebraska. Morningstar offers counseling on two college campuses, as well as in schools, communities, and other integrated care locations with the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska. Clinic sites are based on reservations and in rural and urban settings. Dr. Warrior specializes in treating trauma in children through the utilization of evidenced based practices that have been adapted to the American Indian population. Most recently, Morningstar has become a training site for doctoral candidates with the Munroe-Meyer Institute. This track will focus on integrated care on the reservation as well as provide additional clinical training opportunities in schools, colleges, and in the tribal communities.   Belinda Hinojos, Ph.D., received her bachelor's degree in psychology and master's degree in counseling psychology from the University of Kansas. She completed her Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She is a staff psychologist and training director with Morningstar. In this role, she provides mental health services to American Indian communities in Nebraska. This includes outreach and services to the Little Priest Tribal College and the Nebraska Indian Community College. Dr. Hinojos previously held the position of training director at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s (UNL) Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Throughout her career, Dr. Hinojos has focused on increasing access to quality mental health services for people of color. She began her work at UNL-CAPS as the Diversity Coordinator and Latinx Outreach Specialist. Prior to starting her doctoral program, Dr. Hinojos worked at a community mental health agency in Kansas City providing mental health services to the Latinx community. She is an active member of the National Latinx Psychological Association. She currently serves on the Standing Committee on Diversity through the Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies, in addition to the Training Advisory Committee for the Minority Fellowship Program through the American Psychological Association. This informational brief was created by our partners at the Ohio Association of County Behavioral Health Authorities (OACBHA). The content of this brief was developed from the information provided in a Great Lakes MHTTC training of the same name that was presented by Amney Harper, PhD and Liz Cannon, PhD in June 2022.     Liz Cannon, PhD Dr. Liz Cannon is the Director of the UW Oshkosh LGBTQ+ Resource Center and a senior lecturer in Women’s and Gender Studies.  Amney also administers the LGBTQ Studies certificate program and teaches courses such as Two Spirit Lives and Introduction to LGBTQ Studies. Ey has been developing curriculum for SAFE trainings at UWO for 24 years, and ey started the Resource Center in 2008.   Amney Haper, PhD Amney Harper, Ph.D. is a Full Professor, Graduate Program Coordinator, and Co-Chair of the Department of Counseling and Human Services at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. She also teaches for the LGBTQ Certificate in the Women and Gender Studies Department. She graduated with a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from Auburn University in May of 2008.  Amney engages in a variety of service and scholarly work related to Social Justice and Multicultural Considerations. She serves as a SAFE trainer and a Trans Safe Trainer on campus and is active and involved in a variety of other LGBTQ+ committees, including the LGBTQ Advocacy Council, the Campus Pride Index Taskforce, the LGBTQ+ Resource Center Advisory Board, and the TransAction Committee.  Amney has presented and published widely on LGBTQ+, Multicultural, and Social Justice topics.        The Great Lakes MHTTC has provided this product for individuals working in HHS Region 5: IL, IN, MI, MN, OH, WI. She is currently the Hospital Administrator for Elgin Mental Health Center in Elgin, Illinois, a state forensic psychiatric hospital. She is in private practice at Nickerson & Associates, PC as a bilingual therapist where she treats adults and adolescents with mental health issues, substance abuse issues and sex addictions. She also teaches on these topics at Aurora University and University of Chicago. Previously, she was the Assistant Dean for Health Professions and Public Service at Waubonsee Community College, and she has held other positions within private psychiatric hospitals. Throughout her career, she has worked to increase equity, justice and cultural awareness in these institutions. However, they often have not received the education, training, or ongoing support needed to respond in the classroom. To address this need, the Mental Health Technology Transfer Network, in partnership with the National Center for School Mental Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, developed a free self-guided online course, video library, resource collection, and website focused on educator mental health awareness. This webinar will introduce participants to Classroom WISE, a free 3-part training package that assists K-12 educators and school personnel in supporting students' mental health in the classroom. This training is open to anyone who works with children or is interested in promoting mental health wellness in their local schools. Learning Objectives Participants will:   Learn about Classroom WISE, a free 3-part training package for K-12 educators and school personnel on mental health awareness.   Learn strategies to promote student well-being and support students experiencing adversity, distress, and mental health challenges in the classroom.   Identify talking points and implementation ideas to support Classroom WISE utilization in schools or districts. Trainer Erin Briley, M.S., NCSP                     Erin Briley is the School Mental Health Coordinator for the Mountain Plains Mental Health Technology Transfer Center Network (MHTTC) and a Technical Assistant Associate for WICHE’s Behavioral Health Program.  As the school mental health lead, her work focuses on providing intensive technical assistance, resources, and training school staff to support school-based mental health. As a Technical Assistant Associate, her work is primarily focused on assisting in creating and implementing Psychology Internship Consortiums in rural western states. Ms. Briley has over 20 years of experience working in the schools, serving primarily as a school psychologist for school districts in California, Hawaii, and Colorado while providing direct and indirect supports for children ages 3 through 22 of all developmental levels. Ms. Briley has also served temporarily as a special education and a School Based Behavioral Health program administrator and trained and supervised paraprofessionals providing individualized supports to children with special needs. Ms. Briley has extensive experience with psycho-educational evaluations, classroom, and individual behavioral management, conducting Functional Behavioral Assessments, creating Behavioral Support Plans, special education legal mandates, and rights related to IDEA and Section 504, and learning needs accommodations to support. Ms. Briley earned her Bachelor’s in Human Development and Family Studies at Colorado State University, her Master’s in Counseling/School Psychology and a Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis at California State University Los Angeles and is working on her PhD (ABD) in Clinical Psychology; she is also a Nationally Certified School Psychologist.

ABOUT THIS EPISODE We speak with Aleks Martin, MSW, LSWAIC, SUDP, about the term "kaleidoscope" and how it applies to being a mental health provider from their race, age, sex, gender, sexual orientation, class, and other "isms" that break the community apart.   GUEST Aleks Martin, MSW, LSWAIC, SUDP   Aleks Martin, MSW, LSWAIC, SUDP, has been in the health and social service field for over 20 years. Aleks was drawn to the LGBTQI2+ community in their mid-twenties working for a national HIV-prevention study with youth called, Young Asian Men’s Study (YAMS). This exposed them to the great work of HIV workers from other organizations and how community-based programs are critical in reaching out to the most vulnerable populations. During this time, they worked as a Disease Intervention Specialist with Public Health - Seattle & King County for 7 years, including working on the pilot study for the Rapid HIV Test Kit. A big portion of their professional career was spent at Seattle Counseling Service, a behavioral health agency for the LGBTQ community. From 2003 to 2019, Aleks started as Database Manager, Health Educator, Program Coordinator to Chemical Dependency Counselor and Addictions Program Supervisor. This was the safe space where their yearning for higher education was cultivated so they could serve their community further. As a graduate of the University of Washington’s School of Social Work masters program, Aleks developed their skills as a mental health clinician and social justice advocate. Aleks’ perspectives were shifted and allowed them to have a wider lens for diversity, inclusion and equity. Aleks was inspired to start a private practice to address the special needs of the LGBTQI2+ and BBIPOC (Black, Brown, Indigenous and People of Color), particularly Queer and Trans Asian and Pacific Islander people dealing with unique and special issues that intersect with race/culture and gender/sexuality like coming out, spiritual conflicts, cultural dissonance, gender transition, social navigation at work and other environments, interpersonal relationships from intimacy to friendships, understanding relationships with non-LGBTQI2+ partner(s), and so on. ABOUT THIS EPISODE In this episode we speak with Patricia Deegan, PhD, discussing the unique and unduplicated contribution of peer specialists working as members of clinical teams, in particular, issues around supervision. GUEST Patricia Deegan, PhD Patricia E. Deegan, PhD's mission is to help activate and empower mental health services users in their own recovery and to provide peer supporters and clinicians with the know-how to support people in their recovery journey. She is uniquely positioned to fulfill her vocation because she was diagnosed with schizophrenia as a teenager, went on to get her doctorate in clinical psychology and today leads a company run by and for people in recovery. She is a thought-leader in the field of mental health recovery, has numerous peer-reviewed publications, has held a number of academic appointments, and has carried a message of hope for recovery to audiences around the world. In addition to her work on the CommonGround Program, she consults with OnTrackNY and has helped the team at the Center for Practice Innovations develop an innovative model for engaging young people under the NIMH RAISE Study. She is currently the Hospital Administrator for Elgin Mental Health Center in Elgin, Illinois, a state forensic psychiatric hospital. She is in private practice at Nickerson & Associates, PC as a bilingual therapist where she treats adults and adolescents with mental health issues, substance abuse issues and sex addictions. She also teaches on these topics at Aurora University and University of Chicago. Previously, she was the Assistant Dean for Health Professions and Public Service at Waubonsee Community College, and she has held other positions within private psychiatric hospitals. Throughout her career, she has worked to increase equity, justice and cultural awareness in these institutions. ABOUT THIS EPISODE In the United States, almost half of all people with substance use disorders also meet criteria for a mental health disorder, and vice versa. In this episode, we speak with Elizabeth Black, MRC, LADC, about the importance of understanding how each disorder impacts the other is imperative to providing effective interventions. GUEST Elizabeth Black, MRC, LADC  Elizabeth Black has worked with and on behalf of marginalized populations for more than 15 years. She holds a Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling and is a Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor. Ms. Black serves as subject matter expert, trainer, and technical assistance provider for substance use, mental health, and recovery initiatives. Dr. Stewart is Race-Equity Subject Matter Expert, Trainer & Curriculum Development Specialist at C4 Innovations. In this role, she provides technical assistance, training, and organizational support to national organizations, boards of directors, and behavioral health organizations on implementing anti-racist practices. She utilizes an equity-centered approach to ensure that diversity and inclusion efforts move forward and reduce harm to people marginalized by systems. Her work includes assessing the intersections of identity, structural oppression, wellness, and policy. GUESTS Suganya Sockalingam, PhD  Dr. Sockalingam is a Founding Partner and Change Specialist at Change Matrix, LLC, a small minority- and women-owned business focusing on motivating, managing, and measuring systems change. Dr. Sockalingam supports individuals, organizations and systems address Equity including diversity, Inclusion, Implicit bias and structural racism, cultural competence, and cross-cultural communication. Additionally, Dr. Sockalingam focuses on Leadership Development including leadership shifts (in times of change and in chaos/turbulence), change management, collaboration, and conflict engagement. Dr. Sockalingam provides technical assistance via the Pacific Southwest Mental Health Technology Transfer Center funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration,     Scott van Loo, MA Scott van Loo joined Change Matrix full time as a Project Director and Change Consultant after leaving his role as Director of the Learning Effectiveness Program (LEP) at the University of Denver. Scott is the founder and president of Cedar Tree Consulting, an organization that provides transformational learning experiences focused on equity, change and leadership. He has almost 30 years of experience in pk-16 education including elementary and high school teaching and central and building-level administration with a background in Special Education, English Language Learners, Homeless Education, Equity and Diversity training and parent programs.
