GUESTS Suganya Sockalingam, PhD  Dr. Sockalingam is a Founding Partner and Change Specialist at Change Matrix, LLC, a small minority- and women-owned business focusing on motivating, managing, and measuring systems change. Dr. Sockalingam supports individuals, organizations and systems address Equity including diversity, Inclusion, Implicit bias and structural racism, cultural competence, and cross-cultural communication. Scott is the founder and president of Cedar Tree Consulting, an organization that provides transformational learning experiences focused on equity, change and leadership. He has almost 30 years of experience in pk-16 education including elementary and high school teaching and central and building-level administration with a background in Special Education, English Language Learners, Homeless Education, Equity and Diversity training and parent programs. Download the presentation slides here Session Overview:  Schools are increasingly interested and engaged in universal mental health screening for students to inform early detection and intervention to promote student well-being. However, given the increase in child and adolescent mental health needs increasing over recent decades, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, social media, racial violence and other recent events, schools are understandably concerned about how they will practically and ethically meet the mental health needs of students if they conduct universal screening. This learning session will provide practical information about evidence-informed screening practices to help protect school systems from identifying more student mental health need than they can reasonably address. This includes activities school can engage in prior to screening (e.g., resource mapping, surveillance screening) as well as during the screening process (e.g., gradual scale-up). We will also discuss strategies to address student mental health needs that go beyond referral to mental health treatment (i.e., “Tier 3”), with a focus on options available to low-resource settings that experience barriers to care such as mental health professional shortages. Field examples of mental health screening and how student needs were addressed will be provided to facilitate shared learning. She is also a faculty member with the University of Maryland National Center for School Mental Health, where she is the Director of Quality Improvement and a developer of The SHAPE System. Dr. Connors received her Ph.D. in Clinical Child and Community Psychology and her work focuses on improving access to high-quality mental health promotion, prevention and intervention services and supports for underserved children, adolescents, young adults and their families in critical access points such as schools and community settings.

Recording of Native Food is Medicine: Providing Emotional/Resilient Support for AI/AN Youth through the Healing Power of Food. Join us as we share our cultural connection to food, apply a balanced way of eating, and incorporate Indigenous traditions into our lives with the healing power of food. We welcome Dr. Vanessa Quezada (Kickapoo/Chichimeca). She is a pharmacist and founding member of SanArte Healing and Cultura clinic (https://www.sanartecommunity.com). Her work is at the intersections of Native traditional healing, food sovereignty and renewable energy that build more life-giving systems. Participants will become knowledgeable in providing emotional/ resilient support for AI/AN youth. Our school communities will develop healthier eating habits for successful outcomes in and out of the classroom. We will reflect upon our cultural connections to food and discuss the importance of sugar stability in the body as related to mental health support. We will learn how to adapt a balanced way of eating and discuss the role of stress, sleep and exercise. Together, we will develop plans for improving access to our traditional foods. Session #4

This 2-hour self-paced course is designed to introduce the evidence-based practice of Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) for ACT team members, and those who oversee ACT teams at various levels (e.g., agency, state). Covering the origins and philosophy, and core elements of high-fidelity ACT, this course provides an overview for those new to the model or who have limited experience with ACT. It can also be used as a 'refresher' training for existing team members. The model is discussed in application through three fictional ACT service recipients, that have been informed by decades of experience by the course creators, Lorna Moser, PhD (UNC), and Maria Monroe-DeVita, PhD (UW).   Learning Outcomes Describe how ACT originated within the mental health system Identify the population for whom ACT is intended to serve Name at least 4 key features of ACT     List at least four team member roles within a fully staffed ACT team Describe the importance of fidelity to the ACT model   Certificate of Completion/Contact Hours Available  Physicians, physician assistants, primary care ARNPs, psychologists, and other health care providers may be eligible for CME or CEUs for completing the course. Many individuals are caught up in systems that create and exacerbate their individual trauma. Macro MI is an application of MI that empowers individuals to engage in activism, advocacy, and consciousness raising to address larger systemic issues that impact their lives and influence their wellness. ABOUT THIS EPISODE We speak with Aleks Martin, social worker and LGBTQIA2S+ activist, about how supervisors of behavioral health/mental health providers can focus on the diversity of their team through the lens of race, age, sex, gender, sexual orientation, class, and other "-isms" through compassion and understanding, and challenge our socially conditioned approaches to our practices not just with our clients, but with our fellow professionals. GUEST Aleks Martin, MSW, LSWAIC, SUDP Aleks Martin (S/he pronouns, but they is ok) has been in the health and social service field for over 20 years. Aleks was drawn to the LGBTQI2+ community in their mid-twenties working for a national HIV-prevention study with youth called, Young Asian Men’s Study (YAMS). This exposed them to the great work of HIV workers from other organizations and how community-based programs are critical in reaching out to the most vulnerable populations. During this time, they worked as a Disease Intervention Specialist with Public Health - Seattle & King County for 7 years, including working on the pilot study for the Rapid HIV Test Kit (then a 20-minute test). A big portion of their professional career was spent at Seattle Counseling Service, a behavioral health agency for the LGBTQ community. From 2003 to 2019, Aleks started as Database Manager, Health Educator, Program Coordinator to Chemical Dependency Counselor and Addictions Program Supervisor. This was the safe space where their yearning for higher education was cultivated so they could serve their community further. As a graduate of the University of Washington’s School of Social Work - Masters Program, Aleks developed their skills as a mental health clinician and social justice advocate. Aleks’ perspectives were shifted and allowed them to have a wider lens for diversity, inclusion and equity. Aleks was inspired to start a private practice to address the special needs of the LGBTQI2+ and BBIPOC (Black, Brown, Indigenous and People of Color), particularly Queer and Trans Asian and Pacific Islander people dealing with unique and special issues that intersect with race/culture and gender/sexuality like coming out, spiritual conflicts, cultural dissonance, gender transition, social navigation at work and other environments, interpersonal relationships from intimacy to friendships, understanding relationships with non-LGBTQI2+ partner(s), and so on. ABOUT THIS EPISODE In this episode, Maria Monroe-DeVita, PhD, speaks with Patricia Deegan, PhD, about the role of the peer within a clinical team. GUEST Patricia Deegan, PhD, Pat Deegan & Associates  Patricia E. Deegan, PhD's mission is to help activate and empower mental health services users in their own recovery and to provide peer supporters and clinicians with the know-how to support people in their recovery journey. She is uniquely positioned to fulfill her vocation because she was diagnosed with schizophrenia as a teenager, went on to get her doctorate in clinical psychology and today leads a company run by and for people in recovery. She is a thought-leader in the field of mental health recovery, has numerous peer-reviewed publications, has held a number of academic appointments, and has carried a message of hope for recovery to audiences around the world. In addition to her work on the CommonGround Program, she consults with OnTrackNY and has helped the team at the Center for Practice Innovations develop an innovative model for engaging young people under the NIMH RAISE Study. The model is now being adopted nationally.           HOST Maria Monroe-DeVita, Ph.D, Northwest MHTTC Faculty  Dr. Monroe-DeVita’s expertise is in implementation and services research related to evidence-based practices for adults with serious mental illness, particularly the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) model. She has served as the Principal Investigator on several projects with the Washington State Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery, including the development, implementation, and fidelity assessment of 10 new ACT teams, and several Illness Management and Recovery (IMR) and Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment (IDDT) pilots across the state. She is also in the process of developing and testing novel approaches to better serving people with serious mental illness. She received a collaborative R34 grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to develop and pilot-test the integration of IMR within ACT teams and is working to better define and implement integrated primary care services within ACT. ABOUT THIS RESOURCE This FREE online course was developed by the AIMS Center at the University of Washington with funding provided by HealthierHere. People living with serious mental illness die on average 25 years earlier than people in the general population, largely due to cardiovascular diseases like strokes and heart attacks. In recent years, behavioral health agencies have taken on responsibility to monitor and support the health status of their clients. Case managers in behavioral health agencies form the backbone of efforts to improve the medical outcomes of people living with serious mental illness. This course is designed to prepare case managers for this work. This free online course reviews the reality of increased premature mortality in people living with serious mental illness, explores the medical and social causes of this increased mortality as well as approaches to reducing it and introduces some practical tools and approaches to improving health in the populations case managers serve. The South Southwest MHTTC hosted the State Spotlight Series: Native American Peer Recovery and the Value of Connection on July 28 from 1:30-2:30 CST. Lyndi Seabolt and Casey Ward-Freeman facilitated this session on how the recovery process is unique for Native Americans and the importance of culture in peer services. It explored the history of Native peer support and the progress of peer programs in Oklahoma. This session highlighted the importance of the culture, connection, and decolonization by examining The Indian Country Peer Recovery Specialist ECHO program (Peer ECHO). A sample Peer ECHO case presentation was discussed during this presentation.

Undoubtedly, ongoing and future crises are likely to occur, so proactive planning and preparedness is best approached as an iterative, long-term process. This session will provide practical information about best practices and key resources to promote family-school-community collaboration for collective resilience during the long-term recovery and maintenance phase of an experience with collective trauma. We will share trauma training resources for school professionals and community members, explain strategies and complementary resources for data-driven, iterative learning and planning, and feature local and state examples in the Southeast and nationally.   Learning Objectives: Increase understanding of trauma training policies and resources for school professionals and community members during the recovery and maintenance period. The workshop will build strategies for well-being and emotion-focused communications skills for those caring for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities across a variety of settings.    The following topics will be covered during this workshop:    Trauma (what is it, prevalence, impact)  Signs of post-traumatic stress or other trauma-related reactions that might signal a need for intervention    Evidence-based mental health supports that can help families and individuals with I/DD dealing with post-traumatic stress (what are they, questions to ask when seeking services or making referrals).    Resilience (what is it, how can we cultivate it); Emphasis on the protective power of safe, stable, and nurturing relationships.    Overview of specific strategies for caregivers/adults who care for individuals with I/DD to build: Skills for self-care, emotional self-awareness, and regulation(parents/caregivers/providers) Skills for understanding and responding to child/youth/adult emotional needs:  Communicating about challenging topics (e.g. trauma, stressful events or family transition)  Addressing behavioral challenges  This training was limited to 30 participants. Trainer Marcela Torres Pauletic, Ph.D.   Dr. Marcela Torres Pauletic is a clinical psychologist and Senior Research Associate from the Institute of Behavioral Science, Prevention Science Program, Center for Resilience and Wellbeing at CU Boulder. She has expertise in child social-emotional development, childhood trauma and resilience, and the protective role of relationships throughout the lifespan. Dr. Torres Pauletic regularly provides training and consultation to mental health professionals in evidence-based treatments for families experiencing trauma, and to educators, parents, and other children- and family-serving professionals in relationship-based strategies for building resilience.

July 26, 2022 The United South and Eastern Tribes, Inc. and the New England MHTTC would like to invite you and your staff to attend the Reclaiming Native Psychological Brilliance, a Tribal Behavioral Health ECHO webinar series. Native Psychological Brilliance refers to the intelligence, strengths, balance, innate resources, and resilience of Native people. This no-cost telehealth series will be held throughout 2022 on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 11:00 am Pacific/12:00 pm Mountain/1:00 pm Central/2:00 pm Eastern. Each session will be one hour in length that will provide an opportunity for participants to:  Gain skills on strength-based approaches in partnership with Native People to enhance Native behavioral health,  Discuss ways that Native brilliance is demonstrated and supports behavioral health, and  Learn about Native brilliance examples to share with behavioral health and other health care staff, as well as with local Tribal Nation citizens.    In addition, the concept of Native psychological brilliance will be highlighted through Native music videos and Native spoken word performances as part of each session of the Reclaiming Native Psychological Brilliance series.    Who should attend? Tribal health directors, clinic staff, counselors, social workers, physicians, nurses, Tribal Epidemiology Center staff, and anyone supporting Tribal communities through the health or behavioral health sector are welcome to join.
