Trauma Responsive Practices

When schools understand the educational impacts of trauma, they can become safer, more supportive environments where students make positive connections with adults and their peers. The following resources include free online training packages and opportunities, resources, and tools to equip educators with the skills needed to become trauma responsive.


After a School Tragedy
This resource was developed by a workgroup across the Mental Health Technology Transfer Center Network and is designed to help schools better support students and families in the aftermath of violence and trauma. It provides strategies to assist schools with readiness, response, and recovery to help a school community support resilience in the event of a tragedy.


Child Trauma Academy
The Child Trauma Academy works to improve the lives of high-risk children through direct service, research, and education. Their website provides free educational materials and fosters collaborative working relationships between organizations and individuals to most effectively promote positive change for children.


Karen Purvis Institute of Child Development
The Karen Purvis Institute of Child Development offers training initiatives focused around Trust-Based Relational Intervention to help children suffering from the effects of early trauma, abuse or neglect.


National Child Traumatic Stress Network
The National Child Traumatic Stress was created to raise the standard of care and increase access to services for children and families who experience or witness traumatic events. The website is a resource for professionals, and others who care about and work with children who have experienced traumatic stress.


The Neurosequential Network
The Neurosequential Network develops and disseminates innovative programs and practices to improve life for children, families, and communities. Dr. Bruce Perry produced a series of videos specifically related to COVID-19 and trauma informed practices.


Never Give Up
The National Child Traumatic Stress Network developed this groundbreaking video specifically for youth. Never Give Up features a highly diverse cast of seven adolescents and young adults examining shared and unique challenges faced, mistakes made, and growth achieved in the struggle to transcend developmental trauma legacies.


Trauma and Learning Policy initiative
The mission of the Trauma and Learning Policy Initiative (TLPI) is to ensure that children traumatized by family violence exposure and other adverse childhood experiences succeed in school. TLPI is engaged in a variety of advocacy strategies including supporting schools to become trauma sensitive environments; research and reporting; legislative and administrative advocacy for laws, regulations, and policies that support schools to develop trauma-sensitive environments; building coalitions; outreach and education; and limited individual case repression. TLPI has produced 2 free volumes and videos, entitled "Helping Traumatized Children Learn," available for download. Volume 1 summarizes the research from psychology and neurobiology that documents the impact  exposure to violence can have on children’s learning, behavior and relationships in school. Volume 2 offers a guide to a process for creating trauma sensitive schools and a policy agenda to provide support schools need to achieve this goal.


Trauma Resources
Provided through the South Dakota Center for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment, the Trauma Resources webpage offers a comprehensive list, and access to, dozens of research reports, webinars, resources, books, and external websites that all address childhood trauma nationally.


Trauma Responsive Schools Implementation Assessment Tool (TRS-IA)
A product available through the Treatment and Service Adaptation Center, the Trauma Responsive Schools Implementation Assessment is a quality improvement tool developed is an evidence-informed self-assessment comprising eight key trauma-responsive schools and districts.


Trauma Sensitive Schools Package
The Trauma Sensitive Schools Training Package includes a variety of resources for educating school staff about trauma and trauma-sensitive practices and for providing school leaders with a step-by-step process for implementing a universal, trauma-informed approach using package materials.


Turnaround for Children
Turnaround for Children connects the dots between science, adversity, and school performance to catalyze healthy student development and academic achievement. Turnaround’s website has evidence-based tools and services that help all students, no matter how much adversity they experience.


Understanding Trauma Webinar Series: Conscious Discipline
In support of COVID-19 response, the “Understanding Trauma” webinar series is available at no cost for 90-days. This three-Part webinar series from Dr. Becky Bailey disrupts the cycle of trauma by bringing new awareness to our current trauma epidemic and building healthy, healing relationships through self-regulation, connection, and resilience interventions.
