Kids who have used alcohol or drugs, have issues with truancy, have destroyed properties, or have performed certain low-level crimes are eligible for diversion programs in South Dakota. Service providers have a range of treatment options, depending on location, and may prescribe evidence-based services such as functional family counseling, conflict substitution preparation, or drug use disorder therapy. More at-risk South Dakota teenagers successfully completed diversion programs in 2019 than any other year since the overhaul in juvenile justice, according to a report released last week.
