This 3-part learning series is intended for individuals working in behavioral health who are interested in building skills that will help increase their engagement in advocacy efforts promoting Hispanic and Latino behavioral health equity. This series will begin with an overview of the importance of advocacy for promoting equity, will transition to skill-building for advocacy, and end with developing action plans for engaging in advocacy. The goal of this series is to better equip and prepare behavioral health workers to advocate for behavioral health equity for Hispanic/ Latino clients and communities at the local, state, or federal. In "Fronterismo - Supporting Transborder School Mental Health," the third installment of The Needs and Joys of our (Im)migrant Students, Families, and Community Partners: Exploring and Expanding our School Mental Health Practice, a special three-part series focused on (im)migrant student mental health, we: focused on shared risk and protective factors for vulnerable populations outlined school programs like CBITS and restorative justice Community Building Circles highlighted cultural adaptations of both models.   The audience for the event included mental health professionals, administrators, educators, recovery specialists, students and others.

About this Resource: As of July 1, 2022, the Hispanic population accounts for 19.1% of the total population of the United States, making it the largest ethnic or racial minority in the country and the second fastest growing minority after Asian Americans. Like many minority communities, the Hispanic community faces complex challenges and displays distinctive strengths when confronting mental health issues. While nearly 22% of Hispanic Americans report living with a mental health condition, only one-third report receiving any kind of mental health services or treatment. Several factors influence this community’s engagement with the behavioral health care system, including language and cultural barriers, access to preventive care, and lack of adequate health insurance. As this population continues to grow, it is imperative that mental health clinicians equip themselves with information, structural competency, and cultural humility to meet the mental health needs of the Hispanic community. The purpose of this report is to shed light on the current mental health landscape for Hispanic individuals seeking mental health care in the Southeastern states and the clinicians who serve them.

Trauma-informed care and culturally responsive care are two important mental health service delivery approaches that are increasingly recognized as necessary for providing effective and equitable mental health care. Latino communities in Ohio face several challenges, including limited accessibility to healthcare services, particularly mental health care, and a lack of multicultural and multilingual clinicians. Implementing culturally responsive and trauma-informed approaches can effectively support mental health professionals to address the needs of Hispanic and Latino populations in Ohio. By providing accessible, sensitive, and tailored care, professionals can promote help-seeking behaviors, healing, resilience, and well-being within these communities.

The Caminos Translational Project will review results from the Caminos Research Study and translate key findings for numerous stakeholder groups that would benefit from increased awareness of outcomes associated with this research. The goal of this project is to increase awareness of the unique experiences of Latino youth and families, including the risk/protective factors and contextual variables, associated with the emotional well-being and academic success of participants in the research study. A total of four factsheets and 1 booklet resulted from this initiative.  The Caminos Research Study examines how stressors and supports in youth’s social environments shape family functioning and a range of indicators of adolescent health and well-being. Adolescents’ mental health outcomes are measured by internalizing symptoms (e.g., depression, anxiety) and externalizing symptoms (e.g., conduct disorder, aggression, rule-breaking). Other adolescent outcomes include substance use, prosocial behaviors, and grade point average. Stressors examined include ethnic discrimination, COVID-19, and immigration threats. Supports examined include teacher, peer, and parent support. Additional factors assessed include traditional Latino cultural values as well as cultural gaps between parents and their children and between parents and the school.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted Latinx communities and highlighted how preexisting health disparities increase mental health conditions (Fortuna & Tolou-Shams, 2020). Challenges faced by Latinx families such as bereavement, food insecurity, reduced access to mental health services, and housing instability emphasize the critical need to translate and apply the best practices at the intersection of behavioral health, comprehensive school mental health systems, and Hispanic cultures. The purpose of this product is to share the lessons learned in implementing behavioral health strategies during the pandemic and exchange ideas for future responses and programs’ needs for improving Latinx communities’ mental health. The resource is a collaboration among the National Hispanic and Latino MHTTC, Central East MHTTC, National Center for School Mental Health, and the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University.

Curriculum Package
Young gang membership is prevalent in the US. Youth gang membership is associated with serious violent offending and victimization. Youth gang membership elevates the risk of various negative, potentially long-term social and health consequences. Law enforcement agencies report a greater percentage of Hispanic/Latino and African-American/black gang members compared with other races/ethnicities. The most recent figures provided by law enforcement are 46 percent Hispanic/Latino gang members, 35 percent African-American/black gang members, more than 11 percent white gang members, and 7 percent other race/ethnicity of gang members. This curriculum aims to help educators and school mental health clinicians working with Latino youth understand the risk factors and intervention strategies specific to Latino youth. Training Objectives Participants will discuss the unique historical context that puts Latino youth at risk for joining and staying in gangs and the social determinants of health associated with gang involvement. Participants will examine evidence-based prevention and intervention strategies as well as best practices in the cultural adaptation of existing protocols will be reviewed. Participants will idenifty cultural considerations for the clinician-youth and educator-youth relationship will be discussed.

The Latinx LGBTQ+ youth group represents a range of sexual orientations and gender identities and expressions. Their diversity also includes the intersection with other aspects of their identity beyond race and ethnicity, such as religion, ability, and socioeconomic class. This factsheet focuses on group therapy as a culturally appropriate intervention and the role of clinicians in supporting Latinx LGBTQ+ youth dealing with chronic stressors to cultivate self-acceptance and affirm their sexual and gender identity.

The current booklet: The Experience of Being a Non-Latinx Mental Health Professional Who Works with Latinx Clients: Providing Appropriate Transcultural Care is designed to provide means to increase health equity among Latinx populations. The main purpose is to: Describe approaches to recruit non-Latinx providers in our efforts to address Latinx health and behavioral health inequities. Provide strategies to increase the competency and proficiency of all providers who work with Latinx communities. Describe cultural themes to consider while providing mental health services for Hispanic and Latinx clients to increase practitioner’s cultural responsiveness. Identify strategies to approach mental health services for non-Latinx mental health providers.

Latinxs living in the US experience disparities in access and quality of mental health services. The social determinants of health, immigration status, immigration-related trauma, and the cumulative experience of inequity, combined with vulnerability during pregnancy and postpartum may result in a higher risk for mental health symptoms. Perinatal Mental Health Disorders (PMHDs) is a term used to include the various disorders that can affect individuals during pregnancy and postpartum. This advanced course provides relevant information on cultural considerations and culturally responsive treatment approaches for mental health providers working with Latinx populations experiencing or at risk for PMHDs.
