Toolkit
About this Resource:       The COVID-19 Pandemic caused many providers of mental healthcare to shift from in-person to virtual services. After several months of working from home, many clinicians are beginning the process of returning to in-person services or hybrid service provision. This toolkit is meant to help clinicians prepare for their return to in-person service work by providing tools for planning their return, practicing self-care strategies, and reducing anxiety and burnout.

View Slide Deck During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in overall stress and general mental health challenges. In addition, the pandemic has been associated with an increased range of traumatizing influences on children and youth, including elevated stress, separation from family and friends, observing stress and anxiety in others, elevated abuse and neglect, and bereavement issues related to lost loved ones. This training will focus on how trauma from a variety of backgrounds can be addressed by transforming school mental health through Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) and using a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) framework to create a continuum of supports. Specifically, the training will cover what schools can do at the universal level (tier 1) for all students and adults in the building, including strong positive school climate and social-emotional learning programs along with trauma-related strategies such as the 4 R’s of trauma-informed approaches (Realize, Recognize, Respond and Resist re-traumatization) and Psychological First Aid (PFA). Following universal strategies, more targeted strategies at the secondary level (tier 2) and tertiary level (tier 3) will be provided, focused on cognitive-behavioral strategies such as Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) and Trauma-Informed Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT). View Slide Deck UnMASKing Healthy Relationships is a highly experiential workshop that creates a safe space for individuals and teams to engage in an uncommonly open, honest dialogue. Studies show the lack of mental health services for many communities is based on the long-standing stigma of being associated with having any Mental Health Challenges. Fear of being associated will cause people to forego support in order to protect a mask of I’m Fine, I’m Good, or I’m OK. Our work in Ever Forward recognizes that each person has a set of shared human needs – for support, expression, recognition, meaning, and connection. By closing the gap between who we are on the inside and who we show up as at work, school, and life we create more meaningful connections, healthier communication, deeper engagement – and ultimately more powerful results. Through presentation, hands-on activities, and film this workshop will introduce participants to the world of wellness support groups through our work with young men. Far too often urban youth have to navigate the complex world of school, home, and the streets by themselves. Issues like fitting in, self-esteem, trauma, loss, body image, and the pressures of life often keep youth from realizing their full potential inside and outside of school. This workshop will empower participants to create more inclusive spaces at work and in their personal lives.   Presenter: Ashanti Branch, M.Ed.

Behavioral health practitioners and organizations are often required to determine whether a particular intervention meets the needs of their clients, staff, and/or funders. The Best and Promising Practice (BPP) Fact Sheet Library, developed by the MHTTC Network, is designed to provide the mental health workforce with information about a wide array of evidence-based and promising approaches. Each fact sheet in the library summarizes a specific behavioral health practice, its evidence base, and steps for successful implementation.  In this sheet, we provide an overview of the principles and practice of Preventing Long-Term Anger and Aggression in Youth (PLAAY).

View Slide Deck According to Dr. Karen Mapp, “Parent participation is the leading predictor that supports students’ academic success, regardless of family race, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, or cultural background.” Research has consistently demonstrated that when families are engaged children benefit. In spite of the research, we continue to struggle with building and sustaining effective family-school partnerships because stakeholders have not had the opportunity to develop the capacity to partner effectively. This session will review best practices that provide opportunities for educators to effectively engage with all families and create opportunities for families to develop their ability to support their children’s learning and development. Attendees will learn how to build social capital for families and move from implementing activities where some “families just show up” to events that build the capacity of families to support their children’s education!   Presenter: Sherri Wilson

View Slide Deck Transitioning back to school is often difficult for children and adolescents, but this September will likely present more challenges than usual. The pandemic has left many students socially, emotionally, and academically less equipped to return to the classroom, so it is imperative that educators have the essential tools to ensure a smooth transition. Using analogies, humor, and experiential exercises, Dr. Steve Mazza will teach the core principles of human psychology as they relate to teacher-student relationships, classroom dynamics, and the re-opening of schools this fall.   Presenter: Steve Mazza, Ph.D.
