The New Suicide & Crisis Lifeline 988

Published:

Effective July 16, 2022, funded in part by SAMHSA and administered by Vibrant Emotional Health, texts and calls to 988 and chats to 988lifeline.org are answered by a network of prepared call centers around the U.S. It is a direct connection to compassionate, accessible support for anyone experiencing mental health related distress, including thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crisis, or any other kind of emotional distress.

The nationwide transition to 988 as a three-digit call, text, and chat line is just the first important step in reimagining crisis support in the U.S. Behavioral health providers should stay informed about 988 and emerging crisis services such as mobile crisis teams and crisis stabilization services.

Help spread the word about 988:

SAMHSA has added downloadable print files for wallet cards, magnets, and posters to its 988 Partner Toolkit. The toolkit already includes logo and brand guidelines, key messages, frequently asked questions, fact sheets (English and Spanish), radio PSA scripts (English and Spanish), and more. 988 print materials are available for ordering from the SAMHSA store and social media shareables about the basics of 988 are also available.
