ABOUT THIS EVENT This 90-minute webinar aims to equip professionals in the mental health and addiction field with the skills needed to effectively supervise and support peer support specialists and other lived-experience professionals in behavioral health settings. These individuals provide a valuable service by drawing on their own experiences with recovery to inspire others, model effective coping strategies, and support engagement in services. However, supervising them presents unique challenges due to the specific nature of their roles and the central role that their personal experiences play in their work with others. Heath previously served as the Deputy Commissioner for the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, received a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Central Oklahoma and completed graduate degrees from the University of Oklahoma in Human Relations, Administrative Leadership, and Women’s and Gender Studies. Heath’s most important achievement is being the adoptive parent of three Choctaw American siblings.

Event Description The mental health fields have long been leaders in understanding and raising awareness of the importance of understanding power and privilege. Multiple critiques in the past decade, however, have suggested that an overly simplistic understanding of these constructs can impede personal and professional development in multicultural awareness and, as such, be detrimental to those with whom we work. Thus, in this presentation, nuanced understandings and analyses of power and privilege will be discussed on the basis of advancements in the anti-oppression and antiracism literature.    Trainer Melanie Wilcox, PhD, ABPP  Dr. Melanie Wilcox is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences, Institute of Public and Preventive Health, and Department of Psychiatry at Augusta University. She is also a licensed psychologist and board certified in counseling psychology and works part-time in private practice providing both therapy and assessment via telehealth. Her clinical areas of expertise include culturally responsive and trauma-informed care as well as substance abuse and addiction. Her research focuses on culturally response and antiracist psychotherapy and training, racial and socioeconomic inequity in higher education, and racial and social justice more broadly. She is in her final year as a member of the American Psychological Association’s Board of Educational Affairs, which she chaired in 2020, and is currently President Elect-Elect of APA Division 17, the Society of Counseling Psychology.

The Massachusetts Psychosis Network for Early Treatment (MAPNET) and the New England Mental Health Technology Transfer Center (MHTTC) will host a virtual monthly “Early Psychosis Prescriber Consultation Series” led by Dr. Matcheri Keshavan on prescribing practices for early psychosis, including a review of a selected monthly topic. Our next call is on Monday, July 1st from 11am-12pm EST. Our topic for this month is “Long Acting Injectables” and will be presented by Dr. Raúl Condemarín.   Dr. Raúl Condemarín is a psychiatrist with many years of experience as a psycho-pharmacologist and psychotherapist. He is board certified in Psychiatry, Addiction Medicine, Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychoanalysis. His main areas of expertise are: psychopharmacology, anxiety and mood disorders, and substance abuse disorders. He has conducted research and published in the areas of addiction, psychodynamic psychopharmacology, and the relationship between medical and psychiatric disorders. Dr. Condemarín holds an appointment as Clinical Instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School through his affiliation with Massachusetts Mental Health Center, where he teaches and supervises medical students and residents. He is Editor and Trustee of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry. He is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese.   Attendees are invited to bring deidentified case questions to discuss with the group. Cases do not have to relate to the monthly topic but should be focused on prescribing issues in early psychosis care. The South Southwest Mental Health Technology Transfer Center (MHTTC), invites Region 6 Peer Specialists and Family Partners to participate in our monthly networking meetings. These no-cost, virtual meetings offer you the opportunity to collaborate with other Peer Specialists and Family Partners in a supportive, mentoring environment. The goal is to provide a space for resource sharing, support around ways to be most effective when working with clients, options for self-care strategies, and more! This event takes place on the first Friday of each month from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. CT.  About the Facilitator:  Jessi Davis (she/they) is an experienced Program Coordinator with a demonstrated history of working in the Peer Support, Mental Health, and Substance Use Recovery fields. Jessi is known for work surrounding Youth and Young Adult Peer Support training, technical assistance, and leadership. Their qualifications include Mental Health Peer Specialist, Recovery Support Peer Specialist, Peer Recovery Support Specialist – Transitional Aged Youth, and Digital Peer Support certifications. Currently working at the South Southwest Mental Health Technology Transfer Center, Jessi works to provide support, technical assistance, and training to the peer workforce throughout the 5 states and all tribal communities within Region 6. They have spent much of their career focused on Youth and Young Adult Peer Support and is currently the President of the National Association of Peer Supporters.

The South Southwest Mental Health Technology Transfer Center (MHTTC) invites peer specialists from across Region 6 to apply for the Healing & Power in Peer Support training. Studies have shown that most people will experience trauma at least once in their lifetimes. In order to be effective, peer specialists should have an embodied understanding of trauma and healing. The Healing & Power in Peer Support training was developed to train peer supporters on the concepts of power and healing-centered practice, and how those concepts impact peer support. The Youth and Young Adult Peer Support training is available for anyone who works, or is interested in working, as a peer specialist. The only prerequisite to attendance is that participants must have previous formal training in peer support practice (e.g., their state’s Peer Specialist certification training, Intentional Peer Support, etc.). This three-day training provides participants with a foundation for how power shows up in peer support relationships, how Healing-Centered Engagement principles can foster healing relationships and “power with,” and how peer specialists can integrate healing-centered principles into their practice of supporting others and themselves. This is a highly experiential training, where participants will integrate practice with their own lived experience through structured reflection, group discussion, and interactive activities. The application deadline is June 17, 2024. Learning Objectives: At the end of this training, it is envisioned that participants will be able ​​to: Identify the basic principles of Healing-Centered Engagement; Employ radical acceptance and empathy to foster healing relationships; Define the concept of “meaning-making” and how storytelling plays a role in healing; Apply skills for holding space in relation to supporting self and others; Describe the different forms that power can take; Assess power dynamics within a peer support relationship to foster “power with” another person; and Understand how racism and oppression impact power dynamics both broadly and specifically to peer support.     Facilitators: Jessi Davis (she/they) is an experienced Program Coordinator and Peer Specialist with a demonstrated history of working in the Peer Support, Mental Health, and Substance Use Recovery industries. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is an evidenced-based intervention model grounded in mindfulness, self-compassion, and values-based action. Clients learn to encounter thoughts and feelings in a mindful way, neither dwelling on them nor pushing them away. At the same time, they are encouraged to act on their most deeply held values. In over 1000 randomized controlled trials and nearly 200 meta-analyses and systematic reviews, ACT has been shown to be efficacious for a wide variety of problems helping professionals address, including depression, anxiety, OCD, psychosis, substance abuse, chronic pain, dealing with cancer, stress, and stigma. Rather than going after reducing symptoms, ACT increases psychological flexibility: the capacity to turn to the present moment as a conscious human being and take action according to personally-chosen values. ACT can enhance your practice as professional as well move one, giving you a transdiagnostic evidence-based model from which to stand. But it can also impact your life, giving you a framework for preventing burnout, finding balance, and engaging meaningfully in the world outside of work. In this two-day, highly interactive virtual workshop, professionals of any experience level will be introduced to psychological flexibility both intellectually and experientially. You will learn what it’s like, in practice, to open up to thoughts and feelings without getting entangled in them, identify what truly matters to you, and take meaningful action. Training modalities will include brief lecture, clinical vignettes, clinical demonstrations, mindfulness exercises, experiential exercises, large group discussions, small group discussions, and small-group skills practice. This won’t be your typical slog of slides as you sit for hours with glazed eyes. You’ll get multiple opportunities to watch ACT demonstrations, practice ACT with yourself, and practice ACT skills with others. The workshop is intended to be both professionally and personally meaningful.   LEARNING OBJECTIVES Define psychological flexibility and identify its six components: acceptance, defusion, present moment awareness, self-as-context, values, and committed action. Identify three strategies for facilitating acceptance and willingness with clients. Identify three strategies for facilitating defusion with clients. Help clients contact the moment-to-moment experience of thoughts, feelings, and sensations without becoming absorbed in them or trying to push them away. Contact a sense of self that is more stable than transient thoughts and feelings and transcends personal narratives about who they are and what they are capable of. Facilitate conversations with clients about personal values and values-based behavior activation.   PARTICIPANT REQUIREMENTS Must have the appropriate technology and work environment to join the Zoom training sessions. Must actively engage during training sessions using both camera and microphone. Space is limited. Twohig, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist in the state of Utah and a Professor of Psychology at Utah State University, where he co-runs the ACT Research Group (with Dr. Levin). He received his B.A. and M.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, his Ph.D. from the University of Nevada, Reno, and completed his clinical internship at the University of British Columbia Hospital. He is past-President of the Association of Contextual Behavioral Science, the organization most associated with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). His research focuses on the use of ACT across a variety of clinical presentations with an emphasis on obsessive compulsive and related disorders. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers, many book chapters, and 9 books, with the most recent being ACT in Steps (with Levin and Ong) and the Anxious Perfectionist (with Ong). His research has been funded through multiple sources including the National Institute of Mental Health and the IOCDF. In 2022, he was rated as currently the most productive author on ACT and that USU was the most productive institution in the world.   This training is co-sponsored by the UW–Madison Sandra Rosenbaum School of Social Work. About this Series: Cognitive behavioral therapy has shown itself to be an effective technique for a variety of experiences of psychological distress. These experiences include but are not limited to depression, anxiety, trauma, sleep disorders and rumination. In this four-week series, Dr. Green, takes you through the foundational aspects of cognitive behavioral techniques that can be readily applied to a variety of presenting concerns. We will cover some basic cognitive techniques and address some of the most common presentations for which cognitive behavioral therapy is utilized. We will also explore the cognitive approach of mindfulness. Learning Collaborative
Due to an overwhelming response, we are no longer taking applications. This virtual learning series is intended for a behavioral health professionals who are interested in participating in an intensive learning and skill development series focused on health equity and advocacy. The learning community will be focused on helping attendees develop critical skills for practicing effective advocacy and community-driven efforts. The learning community will also focus on helping individuals identify advocacy priorities, develop their own advocacy action plan, and learn strategies to extend these efforts into public health policy.   FUNDING SUPPORT: Maximum capacity is 20 participants. The Great Lakes MHTTC will provide funding for up to 20 participants accepted into this learning community at no cost.   APPLICATION DEADLINE: Applications must be submitted by June 28th, 2024. She received her doctoral degree in clinical child psychology and a Master of Public Health from the University of Kansas. Dr. Sampilo currently works as the Director of Behavioral Health Services for the All Hands Health Network, a Lurie Children’s Hospital collaboration. All Hands is designed as a socially and clinically integrated network consisting of various community partners working together to improve the health and well-being of children in some of Chicago’s most underserved and under resourced communities. Dr. Sampilo is particularly passionate about addressing structural and systemic drivers of behavioral health inequity in partnership with communities through advocacy and policy. She previously worked with the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services as their health equity administrator and served as health advisor to the Ohio Commission on Hispanic and Latino Affairs. Nationally, she provides consultation, training and professional development in the areas of health equity and affirming, culturally responsive health care. She brings over eight years of experience in advocacy spaces working to advance the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals and increase access to reproductive and sexual health services and education. Alecia Rodriguez, Ph.D., LMFT, MHC, CSOT is in private practice, holding licensure in Florida, Colorado, Virginia, and Utah, and provides clinical mental health services and marital, couples, and family therapy. She also coordinates mental health services for Miami-Dade County Public schools, including support of LGBTQ+ youth. Dr. Rodriguez offers lectures and workshops on subjects such as adolescent sexuality and working with justice-involved families and provides a range of therapeutic services, including sex therapy and treatment for juvenile and adult sex offenders. She has completed advanced training in clinical trauma, child abuse and neglect, adoption competency, gaming addiction, and autism spectrum disorder. ABOUT THIS EVENT This webinar in partnership with Umbrella Collective will focus on mental health clinical information that seeks to be inclusive of LGBTQIA2S+ identities, authenticity, power, and difference in an anti-oppressive framework.‌‌‌ This training serves to increase critical awareness of overt and covert marginalization dynamics within personal lives, society, and within professional work within each organization/s. The goal is to build supportive resources and relationships within the culture of the self that extends to professional practice within organization/s that promote an inclusive, anti-oppressive stance to benefit everyone. Learning objectives: Develop an anti-oppressive lens toward LGBTQIA2S+ people in personal and professional life. Increase understanding of one’s role in upholding and maintaining systems of power over marginalized identities within society and at the organization/s. Build and deepen relationships within the group to hold one another accountable to LGBTQIA2S+ identities with anti-oppression growth goals and actionable steps. Deepen one’s knowledge and resource toolkit to have an LGBTQIA2S+ inclusive mindset in the face of overt and covert oppressions that occur in a day-to-day context within the work of the organization/s. The Umbrella Collective is a private group psychotherapy and DEI training practice in Boulder CO.   Virginia Sanford, LPC (she/her) Virginia Sanford has worked with adolescents, adults and families in a range of different settings from wilderness and residential therapy to community mental health. She has worked extensively with adventure and equine therapy as a way to facilitate experiential growth and deepen relationships with self and the world around us. Virginia is passionate about working with grief and loss as it relates to trauma, identity, ability and the multitude of ways that we experience loss as humans. Change can be hard and it can be scary, but it can also be exciting and fulfilling. Virginia works to help create space to access the range of experiences that arise through the therapeutic process. Virginia's clinical approach draws from several theoretical orientations including Attachment based, Trauma informed and Client-Centered lens.

DESCRIPTION SAMHSA's Region 3 Central East Mental Health Technology Transfer Center partnered with Advocates for Human Potential, Inc. (AHP) to develop Black and Latinx Perinatal PTSD: What Behavioral Health Providers Need to Know. This four-session virtual training series aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of perinatal post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), specifically in the context of Black and Latinx mothers. Session 3 will discuss challenges and needs associated with mental health diagnoses among these populations. Throughout the series, participants will gain knowledge and skills to support and provide culturally sensitive care to Black and Latinx mothers experiencing perinatal PTSD. Trainings will build on one another but can also stand alone, so participants can attend some or all of the trainings. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Examine the stigma surrounding mental health diagnoses within Black and Latinx communities. Recognize the unique mental health needs of Black and Latinx mothers during the perinatal period. Develop culturally sensitive strategies to promote mental well-being and support resilience in Black and Latinx mothers with mental health diagnoses. PRESENTERS Tiffany Malone, M.A., is a seasoned senior program manager at Advocates for Human Potential (AHP), bringing two decades of experience to her role. She spearheads the Mentored Internship Program under the California Department of Health Care Services’ Behavioral Health Workforce Development Initiative. As the Deputy Director, Tiffany provides strategic planning, oversight, management, and invaluable training and technical assistance (TA) to behavioral health organizations across California, aiding in the expansion of the state’s behavioral health workforce. With expertise in various training formats and extensive management experience, Ms. Malone is adept at driving performance and fostering growth within her teams. Prior to her time at AHP, she provided behavioral support to families, specifically mothers with children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. She is deeply committed to advocating for Black maternal and infant health. Her dedication extends to her involvement with the African American Infant and Maternal Mortality Village Fund, where she champions holistic wellness services for Black and Latinx mothers. She actively addresses systemic issues contributing to maternal mortality rates among Black and Latinx women in Los Angeles County. Ms. Malone holds a B.S. in health management from Howard University and an M.A. in teaching applied behavior analysis from National University. Additionally, she is certified as a Master Life Coach, Cognitive Behavior Life Coach, and 200-hour yoga instructor.   Linzi A. Jack, M.A., NBC-HWC, is a senior program associate with AHP and a Board-Certified Integrative Health and Wellness Coach with more than 12 years of experience in the policy and organizational landscapes of behavioral health, homelessness, and substance use. She has a keen focus on advancing health equity by reducing the socioeconomic barriers that drive poor health outcomes for underserved communities. Ms. Jack provides dynamic thought leadership, logistical support, TA content development, and grantee support to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Behavioral Health Technical Assistance Program and the Illinois Regional Care Coordination Agency Projects at AHP. She has an extensive background in implementing large-scale quality improvement programs for Federally Qualified Health Centers, including the National Committee for Quality Assurance Patient-Centered Medical Home Certification and the Centers for Disease. Control and Prevention Immunization Quality Improvement for Providers program. Ms. Jack holds a B.S. in psychology from Howard University and an M.A. in integrative health and wellness coaching from the Maryland University of Integrative Health.

  The Person-Centered Recovery Planning (PCRP) Consultation Corner is a 6-month learning series featuring a monthly webinar on the “FAQs” of PCRP; offering practical tools and resources to support quality PCRP at the level of both individual service delivery and organizational systems change; and providing follow-up “office hours” through smaller-group technical assistance for webinar participants who wish to take a “deeper dive” on a given topic. The topic for webinar session 4 is "Promises and Pitfalls-Designing Planning Templates & Electronic Health Records to Support PCRP." The design of planning templates and electronic health records can present as a major obstacle to the quality implementation of Person-Centered Recovery Planning. Traditional designs are frequently dominated by problems, pathology, and complex workflows that focus more on the support of billing and compliance rather than on the support of the person and their recovery and life goals. In contrast, a thoughtfully designed EHR can facilitate person-centered practice by increasing the focus on key recovery concepts, facilitating dialogue between providers and persons served, and generating the co-creation of meaningful plans to help shape the person’s recovery. By elucidating common design pitfalls and identifying promising design practices, this webinar will offer practical guidance to mental health systems so they can move toward the development of EHRs that facilitate, rather than hinder, the uptake of Person-Centered Recovery Planning. At the end of the session, participants will be able to Identify at least 2 key questions to consider in the process of selecting an EHR vendor. Describe at least 3 EHR design strategies to maximize a recovery-oriented approach in Person-Centered Recovery Planning. Describe at least 2 implementation strategies to support the quality uptake of newly designed EHR recovery planning platforms.   While the Consultation Corner’s webinar series is open to a national audience, priority for technical assistance office hours following this webinar session on July 10 will be given to webinar participants from the New England (Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, Maine, Rhode Island, New Hampshire) and South Southwest (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Texas) regions.   Presenters: Janis Tondora and Dan Wartenberg Janis Tondora, Psy.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine.  Her work involves supporting the implementation of person-centered practices that help people with behavioral health concerns and other disabilities to get more control over decisions about their services so they can live a good life as they define it. She has provided training and consultation to over 25 states seeking to implement Person-Centered Recovery Planning and has shared her work with the field in dozens of publications, including her 2014 book, Partnering for Recovery in Mental Health: A Practical Guide to Person-Centered Planning. Janis’ consultation and publications have been widely used by both public and private service systems to advance the implementation of recovery-oriented practices in the U.S. and abroad. Since getting sober in 2004 Yassine has made his presence felt in the competitive running world, mostly gravitating towards trail and mountain ultramarathons. He routinely places near the top of the field in some of the most difficult American and international events. In 2015, Yassine was one of five American runners who represented the USA at the IAU World Trail Championships in Annecy, France, where the team went on to take the silver medal. Despite all of this, Yassine is most proud of the accomplishment of staying sober and being present for life one day at a time. He lives close to the trails with his wife, daughter, and furry family members!  Mike Grant, LCSW, CADC-II Mike Grant is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in both Oregon and Washington and a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor with expertise in trauma therapy and addiction treatment. He holds certifications as an Ultrarunning Coach, further enhancing his ability to support athletes in overcoming mental barriers to achieve their performance goals. Currently, Mike serves as a hospital-based addictions therapist at Kaiser Permanente in Portland, OR. In addition to his work at Kaiser, Mike operates Aid Station Therapy, a private practice that specializes in trauma therapy utilizing EMDR and Brainspotting modalities. Through Aid Station Therapy, Mike provides a compassionate and supportive environment for individuals seeking healing and growth. Her patient-centered approach incorporates evidence-based psychological treatments for chronic pain, such as CBT, ACT, EAET, and PRT, while partnering with each patient to understand their unique needs and tailor treatment accordingly. Bethany has collaborated with research teams at UW/Seattle Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical System, Medical University of South Carolina, and academic medical centers across Michigan to study biopsychosocial approaches to understand, treat, and prevent acute and chronic pain. She is passionate about advancing research to better understand these complex conditions and translate discoveries into effective personalized treatments for children, adolescents, and adults.   Eric Wanzel, MSW, LICSW Eric Wanzel is a masters-level therapist at the University of Washington’s Center for Pain Relief.  Eric has a special interest in the intersections between chronic pain and PTSD and provides evidence-based interventions to this population including CBT, ACT, PRT, CPT, PE, and WET.  He received his foundational training at the State University of New York and specialized training with the Neuro Orthopaedic Institute Australasia (i.e. noigroup) in pain neuroscience education and graded motor imagery.  Eric strives to provide whole person and multidisciplinary healthcare to underserved populations in addition to educational outreach and training for healthcare providers.   Elisabeth Powelson, MD, MSc Elisabeth Powelson is trained in anesthesia and pain medicine and treats patients at the University of Washington’s Center for Pain Relief and Harborview Medical Center. Additionally, she is an acting assistant professor in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine and a T32 Research Fellow at the Pediatric and Sleep Innovations Lab.  She has a special interest in post-traumatic pain, PTSD, and pain in older adults. Successful outcomes largely depend upon the quality of interpersonal relationships with people receiving services. Workers must maintain a balance between being supportive, empathic, and understanding, yet professional at the same time. In a trauma-informed and inclusive Human Services setting, monitoring the risk of boundary crossings and other ethical issues is a constant process for the worker. Since work scenarios are constantly in flux, the worker must be alert to possible boundary crossings and how to communicate effectively with clients and coworkers to prevent confusion and harm. This training explores the nature of boundary issues at work by looking at the five different risk areas for most staff, offering tips and best practices for reducing the risk of boundary problems in the workplace. Trittschuh, PhD Dr. Emily Trittschuh is a clinical neuropsychologist and the Associate Director of Education & Evaluation with the Veteran Administration (VA) Puget Sound Healthcare System’s Geriatric Research Education Clinical Center (GRECC). She is also a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine. She has specialized in neurodegenerative disease and geriatrics throughout her career.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Psychosis (CBT-P) is an evidence-based approach to support recovery for individuals experiencing psychosis. Case conceptualization can guide CBT-P individual treatment and team-based treatment in a multidisciplinary setting, such as a First Episode Psychosis (FEP) team. In these monthly case-based learning calls, First Episode Psychosis (FEP) Team Leads and Therapists in MHTTC Region 6 will practice using case conceptualization models for young people on their FEP teams. Each month, up to two providers will have the opportunity to present their case conceptualization and receive feedback from the group. Providers will be asked to submit their case conceptualization one week in advance of the call. Samantha Reznik, PhD, will facilitate the calls. Although the calls will practice using a CBT-P case conceptualization, other modalities may be integrated as clinically indicated by the conceptualization and an emphasis will be placed on shared decision-making and recovery-oriented approaches. Participants should expect to learn basic theory of CBT-P case conceptualization rather than to be competent in provision of full CBT-P. Further CBT-P training options will be discussed during the series.   Interested parties should register by completing this form by December 18, 2023 and expect to share at least one case conceptualization within the six-month series as well as having some materials to review in January. Applications will be reviewed and all applicants will be notified of the status of their selection by January 5, 2024. Accepted participants are expected to share at least one case conceptualization within the six-month series and will have some pre-work materials to review in January.   Facilitator Samantha Reznik is the current research postdoctoral fellow with the Advancing the Early Psychosis Intervention Network in Texas (EPINET-TX) project at the Texas Institute for Excellence in Mental Health (TIEMH), University of Texas at Austin. She has specialized in providing recovery-oriented services to individuals diagnosed with serious mental illness (SMI) and other underserved populations. She completed her PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of Arizona. She trained in Coordinated Specialty Care (CSC) and Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Psychosis (CBT-P) at the Early Psychosis Intervention Center (EPICenter) in Tucson, Arizona. She completed an advanced clinical fellowship in rehabilitation and recovery for SMI at VA San Diego Healthcare System/University of California San Diego (VASDHS/UCSD), where she expanded her training in CBT-P and learned how to integrate Recovery-Oriented Cognitive Therapy (CT-R). She also completed a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)-funded clinical internship at University of Kansas Medical Center to specialize in working with underserved populations.     Positionality statement:   I have been passionate about CBT-P since I saw how it can be used to effectively partner with young people in service of recovery. One important area of non-expertise in my use of CBT-P is that I do not have lived experience of psychosis or participating in CBT-P. Having a positionality as only provider rather than receiver of services, I am mindful that lived experiences may or may not align with the evidence base of CBT-P. I work to honor each individual’s lived experience of participating in CBT-P by sharing and collaboratively building any case conceptualizations and partnering in setting goals and techniques. I apply CBT-P flexibly and use CBT-P case conceptualization to guide therapy, which often incorporates strategies from other modalities.
Meeting
The Region 6 Peer Support Advisory Committee (PSAC) to the South Southwest MHTTC meets on a monthly basis to collaborate across the states and tribal communities to identify and address common areas of need and share resources. Based on feedback from the PSAC, and needs identified by peers across Region 6, the MHTTC organizes training and technical assistance focused on peer retention and workforce development. ABOUT THIS EVENT The Northwest MHTTC is excited to collaborate with the Mountain West AIDS Education & Training Center Program (AETC) on this webinar series related to sexual health.  Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show a 74% increase in syphilis diagnoses from 2017-2021, including 2,800 congenital, or mother-to-child, syphilis cases in 2021 leading to 220 infant deaths. STIs overall have increased by 7% from 2020, with more than 2.5 million cases reported in the United States during 2021. Substance use, particularly methamphetamine use, appears to be highly correlated with rising rates of syphilis and other STIs. Among pregnant women with syphilis, substance use is nearly twice as high among those with a congenital syphilis outcome than those without transmission. Disparities also exist in syphilis rates across racial and ethnic groups. For example, among American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) persons, the rate of new syphilis cases of nearly four times the rate of white persons in 2020. Syphilis is also increasing among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. Actions can be taken to reverse these trends and prevent transmission of syphilis and other STIs in these and other populations. Addressing the syphilis syndemic requires collaboration between mental health and substance use disorder treatment providers, sexual health service providers, and supportive services providers (e.g., housing). Our final session will provide an update on syndemic conditions that disproportionately impact people living with serious mental illnesses and/ or substance use disorders and discuss the important role of behavioral health providers in screening and linkage to treatment. FACILITATORS Tim Menza, MD, PhD Tim Menza, MD, PhD (he/they), is an infectious disease specialist with advanced training and expertise in HIV, STI, and viral hepatitis prevention and care. Tim has extensive experience in creating, implementing, and evaluating public health policy and advocating for communities through system-level change. As medical director of Oregon’s HIV/STD/TB program over the past 5 and a half years, Tim facilitated the implementation of a free statewide home HIV/STI testing program, public health accountability metrics for the prevention of congenital syphilis, partnerships with correctional facilities to increase HIV/STI/HCV testing and led Oregon’s response to mpox. Tim is currently an associate professor in the department of medicine at the University of Washington and a medical director of the Sexual Health Clinic with Public Health-Seattle & King County. Lydia Chwastiak, MD, MPH Dr. Chwastiak is a psychiatrist, internist and health services researcher who is a Professor in the UW Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.  Over the past 22 years, her research has focused on improving care and outcomes for people with complex needs in low resource settings, such as low-barrier primary care clinics and community mental health centers in the US, and primary and secondary medical settings in India and Nepal. Dr. Chwastiak is co-directs the UW Behavioral Research in HIV (BIRCH) Center, an NIMH-funded AIDS Research Center, and is the PI and co-director of the Northwest Mental Health Technology Transfer Center (NW MHTTC).

You will be provided a stipend for participation.   Facilitator: Rowan Willis-Powell (she/they) is an experienced systems transformation advocate with 10 years of experience using their living expertise to uplift the voices of youth peers, guide development of youth peer programs, educate the behavioral health community about supporting LGBTQIA individuals, and advocate for appropriate and equitable suicide prevention and intervention for youth. Rowan has 10 years of experience connecting and mentoring young adults with lived experience in behavioral health service settings to peer support career pathways and leadership opportunities on community, state, and national levels. Rowan has supported numerous organizations and groups with the process of developing or strengthening their youth serving programs and always strives to ensure that youth voice and youth engagement are at the focus of the work.   If you would like accommodations to participate in any of our events, please contact us at [email protected] ahead of the event date. A member of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa reservation, she remains deeply connected to her roots. Drawing from her extensive background, she has dedicated her expertise to working with children, youth, and young adults facing mental health challenges both in rural and urban areas as well as within mental health facilities.  Dr. Fox Peltier is particularly passionate about developing culturally rooted interventions inspired by Indigenous practices to address mental health issues. In her work, she emphasizes the importance of adopting strength-based approaches, advocating for alternatives to the commonly employed deficit-based practices. She is committed to bridging cultural understanding and mental health care for Indigenous peoples.

The Northwest MHTTC is excited to partner with Kira Mauseth and Salsabiel Alzubaidi to offer a live learning community on culturally informed crisis support as a mental health practitioner. 6 hours of CE contact hours available* (see below.) ABOUT THIS LEARNING COMMUNITY This learning community will provide participants with a framework for developing their cultural awareness and competencies when supporting people in crisis. Often, when providing behavioral health support to an individual or family, we may find ourselves outside of our personal expertise or experience when it comes to the cultural background of the person we are supporting. This learning community will cover important cross-cultural nuances for support, including contextual communication, biases and assumptions, and lenses for expression of distress and appropriate interventions that can vary dramatically amongst and between groups. The framework provided in this session equips health providers with essential tools to understand their own social location, navigate power dynamics, and enhance cultural awareness.  Key tools include:  - Creating a personal cultural understanding map  - Utilizing a multicultural communication skills reflective tool  - Challenging biases with the "Surfacing Assumptions" tool  - Leveraging resources and promoting inclusive organizational practices with advocacy tools  - Developing an inclusive crisis plan for diverse demographics  ELIGIBILITY Members of the mental health/behavioral health workforce who are based in the states of Alaska, Oregon, Idaho & Washington (HHS Region 10) Commitment to attend the whole series is required Each individual must have access to computer/web camera/audio to participate The deadline for applications is July 1st. SESSIONS: Wednesday, July 17 & 24, August 14 & 21, 2024 12:00 - 1:30 pm AK / 1:00 - 2:30pm PT / 2:00 - 3:30pm MT Session 1, July 17th:  This session will start with recognition and awareness of what we each "bring with us" as we engage in supporting others on a dynamic cultural landscape. The focus of this first session will be to go in depth on tools to increase self-awareness of cross-cultural knowledge gaps and biases. Session 2, July 24th: This session will build off the previous one and help participants with recognizing and effectively addressing the power dynamics in a supportive relationship. Session 3, August 14th: This session takes our work further and discusses in detail how we acknowledge and use cultural awareness and understanding to engage effectively in crisis support and emergency response work. Session 4, August 21st: This session wraps up our learning community by discussing ways to represent best practices and advocate for inclusive policies and practices within your organization. FACILITATORS Kira Mauseth, PhD Dr. Kira Mauseth is a practicing clinical psychologist who sees patients at Snohomish Psychology Associates in Everett and Edmonds, WA, is a Teaching Professor at Seattle University and formerly served as a co-lead for the Behavioral Health Strike Team for the WA State Department of Health throughout the COVID response. She also owns Astrum Health LLC and consults with organizations and educational groups about disaster preparedness and resilience building within local communities. Dr. Mauseth has provided training to community groups and professionals both regionally and abroad as the co-developer of the Health Support Team© program. Her work and research focus on disaster behavioral health, resilience, and recovery from trauma as well as small and large-scale critical incident response and preparation for organizations. She has worked abroad extensively with disaster survivors and refugees in Haiti, Jordan and Poland, and has trained first responders and health care workers throughout Puget Sound the United States, and currently serves in the adult mental health clinical seat on Washington State's Disaster Medical Advisory Committee (DMAC). Salsabiel Alzubaidi, MA Salsabiel Alzubaidi is an Organizational Transformation, Leadership, and Legacy Consultant driven by her belief in justice and her appreciation for the rich tapestry of human diversity. With a lifelong passion for innovation in diversity and inclusion across social, educational, and professional realms, Salsi has honed her expertise in guiding organizations through transformative journeys.
