What is the Cognitive Behavior Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) Training and Consultation Cohort?

The Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) program is a school-based, group and individual intervention.  It is designed to reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and behavioral problems, and to improve functioning, grades and attendance, peer and parent support, and coping skills. CBITS has been used with students from 5th grade through 12th grade who have witnessed or experienced traumatic life events such as community and school violence, accidents and injuries, physical abuse and domestic violence, and natural and man-made disasters. CBITS uses cognitive-behavioral techniques (e.g., psychoeducation, relaxation, social problem solving, cognitive restructuring, and exposure).

What is the Support for Students Exposed to Trauma in Schools (SSET) Training and Consultation Cohort?

Support for Students Exposed to Trauma (SSET) is a school-based group intervention for students who have been exposed to traumatic events and are suffering from symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Designed specifically for use by teachers and school counselors, SSET is a non-clinical adaptation of the Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) Program. SSET teaches many of the same cognitive and behavioral skills as CBITS, such as social problem solving, psychoeducation, and relaxation. SSET is delivered in an easy-to-use lesson plan format that is ideal for educators. In 10 group lessons, students who participate in SSET learn a wide variety of skill-building techniques to reduce current problems with anxiety or nervousness, withdrawal or isolation, depressed mood, acting out in school and impulsive or risky behavior. SSET also helps students deal with real-life problems and stressors and increase levels of peer and parent support. The SSET program has been evaluated for use with middle school students ages 10-14 but will likely work well with students in late elementary through early high school. Apply by filling out the application form.

When is the SSET Cohort?

The SSET Training and Consultation Cohort will take place on Thursday, February 3, 2022, 9 - 12 (CST)  and 1 - 4 (CST) ; Friday, February 4, 2022,  9 - 12 (CST). The application deadline is January 15th, 2022 and applicants will be notified of their status by January 26th.
