Core Skills from Evidence Based Practices

Evidence-based practices are often the gold standard for supporting recovery for people with severe mental illness. But, we are not all working in environments with the staffing and/or financial capacity to achieve full fidelity to these models. Below are resources from our 6-part "Keeping It Practical" series as well as stand-alone webinar recordings from leading experts in several evidence-based practices.

Additional Evidence-Based Practice Topics & Resources

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy - Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a behavioral therapy incorporating values-guided and mindful action. An individual participating in this therapy identifies their values, desires, and aspirations, then uses that information to motivate behavioral change. In this on-demand recording (part 1 of a 2-part series) the presenter provides an overview of ACT and discusses the process in using it with clients. In this on-demand recording (part 2 of the series), the presenter reviews how to apply the tenets of ACT (learned in Part 1) to the symptoms and experiences associated with psychosis. For a more in-depth review of the 6 tenets using examples from clinical practice, please view the on-demand recordings from our 4-part "Acceptance & Commitment Therapy: From Introduction to Clinical Practice" series. • Dialectical Behavior Therapy - As caring and competent providers, you realize the importance of having readily available tools to share with your clients whether you are meeting for the 1st or the 15th time. Few evidence based practices offer relevant and accessible skills for decreasing distress, or the vulnerability to distress, like Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).  Although not a comprehensive DBT course, this 4 module seminar provides a snapshot of some of the foundational skills from DBT. Learn how you can integrate DBT-informed skills into your work with clients from a trauma psychologist trained in DBT approaches. This interactive 4-part series, to be offered in the Spring of 2024, will offer didactic instruction, small group discussions, and opportunities for skill-building practice. Registration details will be posted soon. Email [email protected] for more information.
  • Motivational Interviewing - Motivational Interviewing is a brief person-centered evidence-based practice for strengthening an individual’s motivation for and commitment to change. It is a helpful counseling strategy for people with serious mental illness and the skills can be applied during brief therapy encounters and to a variety of behavioral change outcomes such as increasing medication adherence, building independent living skills, and managing physical health issues.  In this on-demand recording, clinicians learn the foundation of motivational interviewing, what the four processes are, how to recognize and respond to change talk and how to apply motivational interviewing skills to practice with clients.
  • Supported Employment - This on-demand recording is motivated by the reality that the majority of individuals diagnosed with ‘serious mental illness’ face significant socioeconomic challenges and high rates of employment.  In place of discrete “one size fits all” evidence-based practices, the presenter discusses the broader landscape of strategies, including supported employment, for improving outcomes across the spectrum of individuals who are currently seeking education or work or have applied for or are already receiving SSI/SSI.  Specific topics covered include career development and career mobility supports, SSI/SSDI decision making, and financial empowerment strategies for individuals currently unable to work or attend school. Click here to view a flipbook resource that reviews evidence-based employment interventions, examines the limitations of these models, and discusses ways mental health providers can help strengthen the career and income pathways for their clients.
  • Supported Housing - In this on-demand recording, panelists describe how the Pathways Housing First program works to end homelessness for individuals with mental illness, addiction, and other health challenges. National experts provide case studies to illustrate how Housing First is successfully implemented to address homelessness through City (Milwaukee County Housing Services), State (Georgia Housing Voucher Program), and Federal (VA Homeless Programs Office) programs.
