Mid-America Crisis Planning Learning Community



HHS Region 7 States GraphicThe Mid-America MHTTC invites districts and/or building level crisis teams to participate in a one-year regional peer learning community focused on assessing current crisis response plans and implementing best practices in school crisis prevention and intervention efforts. Teams selected to participate in the Learning Community will work toward the common mission of meeting student and staff mental health needs during crises and adopting policies and procedures to mitigate the crisis experience and facilitate evidence-based responses. Download the flyer.


Participation Benefits

  • Participate in technical assistance/training sessions from the MHTTC team to support your team’s unique school crisis prevention and intervention priorities and improvement goals
  • Learning Community teams will receive training, coaching and technical assistance by MHTTC team members representing various content areas in and related to evidence-based school crisis planning, and peer networking opportunities within the Learning Community, including:
    • Virtual learning sessions focused on best practices in school crisis prevention and intervention. 
    • Targeted technical assistance via phone/videoconference from school mental health experts
    • Participation in a Learning Community Listserv to facilitate cross-team communication and resource-sharing



  • Applicants must be district or building-level crisis teams from one of the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Region 7 states: Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska.
  • Applicants must identify a core Learning Community team of 2 to 6 members. Ideally, the team would include representatives who are school leaders who can generate system level changes, but this is not required. 
  • District participants should have or be working toward Comprehensive School Mental Health Systems (CSMHS) that have:
    • A full array of tiered services,
    • Collaborative school-community partnerships to address barriers to learning,
    • Evidence-based practices, and
    • Ability to address quality improvement


Expected Responsibilities

  • At least one team member participates in a minimum of four virtual learning sessions with MHTTC leaders for shared learning progress reporting, consultation, and technical assistance 
  • Complete district and school level (as appropriate) quality measures on the School Crisis Assessment and Logistical Evaluation (SCALE) at the beginning and end of the Learning Community
  • Engage in brief ongoing evaluation (including intermittent survey and interview formats) of impact of Learning Community participation
