Meeting the Moment Training Part 1: Ensuring Safety and Educational Equity for Gender Diverse Students

Part 1: Meeting the Moment Training

This recording of the workshop “Meeting the Moment: Ensuring Safety and Educational Equity for Gender Diverse Students” was delivered by the Pacific Southwest MHTTC staff and a team of specialists in Orange County, California, in September, 2023.

Historically and across the nation, systemic discrimination and educational disparities have contributed to deleterious mental health impacts on transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth. This training offers pathways of support that education personnel can provide for TGD students in affirming and accommodating their gender identity in elementary and secondary schools. The workshop is based on a set of resources, Identity Support Plans - Tools to Support Schools in Planning, Safety and Educational Equity for Gender Diverse Students and led by specialists that developed these tools. The recorded workshop offers a dynamic overview of how to utilize these Identity Support Plans (IDSP) to make educational spaces safe and inclusive for ALL students, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.

Meeting the Moment is designed for all education personnel and is structured in five sections to assist school-based mental health providers, administrators, and other professionals with the following learning objectives:

Gain an understanding of:

  • Rhetoric around TGD Children and Youth
  • California Legal Rights and Protections for TGD
  • Strategies that Work - essential methods to foster safe learning environments and social-emotional growth, through the implementation of Identity Support Plans (IDSP).
  • Identity Support Planning
  • Implementation Scenarios Through Role Play & Group Practice
