Person-Centered Recovery Planning: Consultation Corner

Announcing a 6-month Consultation Corner on Person-Centered Recovery Planning (PCRP) facilitated by the New England and South Southwest MHTTCs.

The Consultation Corner will feature a monthly webinar series on the “FAQs” of PCRP while also offering accompanying practical tools and resources to support quality PCRP at the levels of individual service delivery and organizational systems change. Webinars and tools will be offered for a diverse audience of stakeholders including direct support providers, agency and state leadership, peer providers, and people/families with lived experience. Follow-up “office hours” through smaller-group technical assistance will be available to interested webinar participants who wish to take a “deeper dive” on a given topic.

Do you have questions about how to:

  • Tap into the power of peer-support to increase a person's engagement in PCRP?
  • Co-create service plans that more fully honor the spirit of person-centered care while ALSO satisfying the rigorous documentation requirements of funders?
  • Design your agency's Electronic Health Record and service planning template to support PCRP?
  • Support PCRP implementation through leadership and organizational strategies?

If so, join us for the Consultation Corner! See registration links below. Come to one, two, or all of the webinar sessions.

Specific topics for each session have been determined based on feedback we received from participants in Webinar 1 on March 27. Have a burning question around PCRP that you’d like addressed? You can also email us so we can take your feedback into consideration as we design the Consultation Corner series.

While the Consultation Corner’s webinar series is open to a national audience, priority for technical assistance office hours will be given to people in the New England (CT, MA, ME, NH, RI, VT) and South Southwest (AR, LA, NM, OK, TX) regions.

Person-centered recovery planning is a collaborative process between a person and their behavioral health care providers and natural supporters that results in the development and implementation of an action plan to assist the person in achieving their unique goals along the journey of recovery. PCRP is increasingly required by state behavioral health authorities and funders such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services with explicit standards within Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHC) and Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) program models. Despite existing and emerging requirements around PCRP, there remains much confusion in the field regarding its practical implementation. Learn more from this 2021 report on promoting person-centered planning within New England through learning collaborative supports.

  • PCRP Consultation Corner Webinar 3: Peer Specialist Roles in PCRP-Aligning with Peer Ethics & Values (May 15, 2024 from 2-3:30 pm ET)
    • We know that in person-centered recovery planning (PCRP), the person receiving services makes decisions and takes ownership of their plan for recovery. This can be a new and uncomfortable role for people initially, for a variety of reasons. Peer supporters join with individuals to discover and advocate for what they want and need. This does not mean that the peer provider will always agree with people’s choices — however, it’s ALWAYS their ethical responsibility to support individuals in their unique recovery journey as that individual defines it.

Join us for this 90-min webinar as we highlight the mutually beneficial relationship between PCRP and peer support, as well as how staff at clinical provider organizations can intentionally enhance this connection. Participants will also be invited to explore tensions that arise when peer professionals work to maintain their never-directive, non-clinical stance while immersed in an environment that is heavily defined by clinical professionals, processes and services.

At the end of the session, participants will be able to:

      1. Describe a “must do” and a “must not do” related to the role of peer support in PCRP,
      2. Name one way that professional peer support ethics supports a person-centered approach, and
      3. Identify two resources to support and promote peer provider role clarity in PCRP.

  • PCRP Consultation Corner Technical Assistance 3: June 5, 2024: 2-3:30 pm ET (registration information will be given to participants in Webinar 3)

  • PCRP Consultation Corner Webinar 4: Promises and Pitfalls-Designing Planning Templates & Electronic Health Records to Support PCRP (June 19, 2024 from 2-3:30 pm ET)
    • The design of planning templates and electronic health records can present as a major obstacle to the quality implementation of Person-Centered Recovery Planning. Traditional designs are frequently dominated by problems, pathology, and complex workflows that focus more on the support of billing and compliance rather than on the support of the person and their recovery and life goals. In contrast, a thoughtfully designed EHR can facilitate person-centered practice by increasing the focus on key recovery concepts, facilitating dialogue between providers and persons served, and generating the co-creation of meaningful plans to help shape the person’s recovery. By elucidating common design pitfalls and identifying promising design practices, this webinar will offer practical guidance to mental health systems so they can move toward the development of EHRs that facilitate, rather than hinder, the uptake of Person-Centered Recovery Planning.

At the end of the session, participants will be able to

      1. Identify at least 2 key questions to consider in the process of selecting an EHR vendor.
      2. Describe at least 3 EHR design strategies to maximize a recovery-oriented approach in Person-Centered Recovery Planning.
      3. Describe at least 2 implementation strategies to support the quality uptake of newly designed EHR recovery planning platforms.
